1 million Americans face loss jobless benefits in January

One million people could lose unemployment benefits in January if Congress doesn’t extend federal aid, according to a report released Wednesday.

The report is likely to turn up pressure on lawmakers and the president, who earlier this month enacted a record-long extension of federally paid benefits. But the law only helps those who exhaust their lifelines by year’s end.

As it stands now, the deadline to apply for federally paid benefits is Dec. 31. So while unemployment benefits now run as long as 99 weeks, depending on the state, not everyone will receive checks for that long a stretch.

“Congress has less than four weeks left on its schedule to legislate this year, and unless it acts to renew the unemployment provisions during this period, the clock will run out for a million workers,” said Christine Owens, executive director for the National Employment Law Project.

Those who run out of their 26 weeks of state-paid coverage in 2010 will not receive any additional benefits. The jobless currently receiving extended federal benefits, which are divided into tiers, will stop getting checks once they complete their tier.

In addition, come Jan. 1, workers will no longer receive the $25 boost in benefits or be able to apply for a 65% subsidy to continue their company health insurance coverage under the Cobra program. These benefits, along with the Dec. 31 deadline, are part of the $787 billion stimulus program passed in February.

Unemployment Rate Surpassed 10 Percent

The loss of jobs last month exceeded economists’ estimates. It’s the 22nd straight month the U.S. economy has shed jobs, the longest on records dating back 70 years. The unemployment rate has surpassed 10 percent for the first time since 1983 – and is likely to go higher.

Nearly 16 million people can’t find jobs even though the worst recession since the Great Depression has apparently ended. The Labor Department said Friday that the economy shed a net total of 190,000 jobs in October, less than the downwardly revised 219,000 lost in September. August job losses were also revised lower, to 154,000 from 201,000.

Overall, the unemployment rate hit 10.2 percent. But counting those who have settled for part-time jobs or stopped looking for work, the unemployment rate would be 17.5 percent, the highest on records dating from 1994.

The jobless rate rose from 9.8 percent in September.

Friday’s report is the first since the government said last week that the economy grew at a 3.5 percent annual rate in the July-September quarter, the strongest signal yet that the economy is rebounding. But that isn’t fast enough to spur rapid hiring, raising worries of a jobless recovery.

In addition, many economists worry that persistently high unemployment could undermine the recovery by restraining consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of the economy.

H1N1 virus widespread in 48 states

Until 2th Nov, 2009 the CDC ( Centers for Disease Control ) and Prevention said the H1N1 virus is widespread in 48 states. The federal government was invested $3 billion in H1N1 vaccine project.

SC Flu Shots

The health officials warn that those who don’t get vaccinated just take it easy, 99 percent of the people who get H1N1, it is just the flu – a few miserable days at home.

A new H1N1 vaccine is supposed to save the country from the worst-case scenario. But that vaccine isn’t coming as fast as expected and there’s lots of skepticism.

7.2 million jobs will return for Americans

Despite the first signs of economic growth in more than a year, many factors will keep a jobs recovery from occurring for a long time. CNN news report.

The consensus forecast is that job losses ( Find the upcoming Job Fairs In the U.S. )will continue through the end of this year, with many economists not expecting unemployment to peak until next summer. That will add to the 7.2 million jobs already lost in this downturn.

Even with Thursday’s report that showed the economy grew at a 3.5% annual rate in the third quarter, the continued job losses are not a shock.

Jobs are what are known as a trailing or lagging indicator, meaning that they change in response to other economic events, rather than predicting changes the way a leading indicator, such as the stock market, does. That’s because even after a recession has ended, employers are slow to add staff until they’re sure that demand has returned.

Many other economists were already looking for a tough labor market for at least the next year.

According to a survey by the National Association of Business Economics, the consensus forecast of 44 top economists is for an addition of only 12,000 jobs a month in the first quarter of next year.

More than a half of the economists surveyed said that a recovery to pre-recession levels in the job market will return on 2012, that’s mean 7.2 million jobs return.

The parents of a 15-year-old girl who was gang-raped on a California high school campus urged the community Saturday to channel its anger over the event “through positive action,” according to a pastor.

At a Saturday community event at the campus where the attack took place, the Rev. Jim Wheeler, who said he was the family’s pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Richmond, read a statement from the teenager’s parents.

“Stop the violence,” Wheeler read. “Please do not respond to this tragic event by promoting hatred or by causing more pain. We’ve had enough violence already in this place.”

Police say as many as 10 people were involved in the rape on October 24 in a dimly lit back alley outside Richmond High School, where a homecoming dance was taking place.

Another 10 people watched the attack without calling 911, police say.

Five people have been arrested in connection with the attack.
